What can’t you do on the web?
Just a little muse. The question in principal may seem ridiculous, but honestly – what can’t you do on the Internet? Perhaps let’s start with what you can do.
A scenario. I’m an exceptionally lazy person (I’m not – this is for the sake of my example). I’m sat at my computer, watching a film on the Internet. Or listening to music. Or playing a computer game (online chess?! more probably Call of Duty 4!) I get a bit peckish so I order a pizza, online. While I’m at it I can also order a week’s worth of shopping to be delivered to my front door.
I can watch films and TV, listen to virtually any song ever published, read books, watch presentations, order food and drink, purchase a new bedroom, make new friends, hunt down and keep in touch with old friends, contact virtually anyone from any speciality, play games, seek advice, breed virtual pets. Learn and Create and Communicate without picking up a phone or leaving my house.
Of course this isn’t anything groundbreaking. The steady growth of an online world has posed an ever greater presence, especially over the past 10 years. The Internet has come in leaps and bounds. Which poses the scary question – where will we be in another 10 years? With better AI, Virtual Reality, advanced computer graphics, physics, bandwidth, processing power and constantly lower costs and the billions being pumped into the industry around the world. The hundreds of thousands of technicians, scientists, developers and designers working together to progress and evolve in a virtual world.
Whatever you can’t do on the web now – give it a few more years. There will always be many things technology and the Internet can’t replace, but it’s fair to say there’s a lot of big things coming. I got myself a USB mug warmer a few weeks ago and I thought that was cool! Every year we see exciting new technologies pushing the boundaries of what can be done with the power of 1s and 0s. Recently – the Nintendo Wii, iphone, new Macbook, voIP, hosted telephony, even cheaper and faster broadband Internet, the ability to pause and record live TV and even to receive it via wireless Internet!
So what can’t you do on the web? Ask the same question in 10 years time.

You can’t skin a cat online…

I bet you can. I bet there’s a website where you can skin cats. I’ve seen a game on miniclip where you can use a penguin as a baseball.

Hmm – thanks for really raising the standard of the site! It’s supposed to be a professional web design blog!!!
I’m sure a bit of humour can’t hurt…
