The Ebay Domain Market
When building websites for clients, the majority of the time I have no problem purchasing adequate domain names. Sometimes a desired URL may be taken, so I normally find a way around the problem by trying different extensions (eg .com, .co.uk, .net etc) and then slight variations on the company name. I’ve never been in a position where I’ve had to buy the domain from someone else, and if I was I’d most likely find myself very reluctant to do so.
It amazed me to discover, only the other day, that there is a popular business of buying, selling and trading domain names on the top auction site Ebay. They even have their own category! I find the majority of domains for sale are people selling off their domains because they’re no longer used and just want to retain some money from them. But some domains, that aren’t particularly special at all, are selling for literally thousands!
I can understand popular domains or websites with high page rank, or perhaps where someone’s cleverly gotten their foot in the door and obtained domains for upcoming films, artists or companies on the up. Making huge profits by forcing big businesses to buy the domain ownerships off them. But they aren’t. They’re just domains, just bog standard domains like www.fastloans.co.uk that you could generally pick up for around £5 – £20, selling for £hundreds!
Perhaps this is a business I should get into? It seems some people are making a lot of money from selling thin air!
